Journey vs Destination

Journey and destination

Friends, today marked the end of my first 6-month job in Internal Medicine training.

The past six months have been spent indulging myself in the care of the elderly—savouring the ups and downs, developing self-awareness, and learning from colleagues and patients alike.

Those in the medical profession know how challenging it can be to move from one rotation to another—from moving cities in some cases, to getting accustomed to new hospital systems, to meeting new colleagues and working at learning the ropes of the new job.

All of these could be daunting at first. However, with the right perspective and support, one should be fine.

My geriatrics job definitely stretched me personally and professionally. I’m utmostly grateful to everyone who contributed to an amazing training experience for me.

Back to the reason for this post.

Most of the time, we focus so much on the destination or our desired results that we miss out on the blessings and lessons of the journey/process.

In the last few days, I know I have spent a large chunk of time belabouring the subject of JOURNEY and DESTINATION to the amazing people close to me who care to listen to my occasional rants about concepts that I’m becoming more aware of in life.

At the core of these rants is that the journey(in other words the process) makes up a huge part of one’s life and it is as important(if not more) than the destination

I have also learnt that the destination marks the end of an era, after which a new endeavour starts, signalling the start of a new journey and ultimately another destination. And then the cycle continues.

Over time, I have learnt deliberateness in enjoying the journey of any of my life’s endeavours as I anticipate arriving at my desired destination. I try to strive daily to achieve this with the right mindset as this is crucial to enjoying our everyday life.

This is not to say the destination should also not be relished as well. In fact, I recently arrived at a conclusion about this while speaking to one of my amazing friends that destinations should also be intentionally savoured! And this is best done I believe when they are celebrated. Do not gloss over your small or big wins, celebrate them!

I hope that by stumbling on this post you would start to make a conscious effort to relish every moment of your day with the consciousness that every second constitutes your life and you should give nothing to let it slide without savouring it.

I’m definitely looking forward to a much more robust learning experience in my next job!

Thanks for stopping by today and I hope your learnt something.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Yours,

Aarin.
